Farewell to the Summer Paralympics
So this one is coming out to you on the last day of the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. I was hoping to have it in my hands sooner but library holds are taking longer these days (thanks COVID👎🏻). However, if you enjoyed watching the Paralympic coverage as much as we did you will love learning a little more about para sport and Canadian athletes in Amazing Athletes: An All-Star Look at Canada’s Paralympians written by Marie-Claude Ouellet, translated by Phyllis Aronoff and Howard Scott and illustrated by Jacques Goldstyn.
Marie-Claude packs so much information into this nonfiction picture book featuring athletes from many different parasport disciplines, all of whom play for Canada. We found it fascinating to learn about sports we had never heard of like sitting volleyball and goalball. All of the information is easy to access with short pieces of text alongside photos and illustrations. Readers get a fabulous overview of the tremendous accomplishments of some of Canada’s most decorated athletes.
It has been wonderful to be able to access more coverage of the Paralympics this summer thanks to the fantastic work by the people at CBC. I would hope that for future games, we will be able to see more events live rather than after the fact but have been enjoying following along and seeing the incredibly inspiring athletic accomplishments.
Even though the summer games have come to a close we have a winter Paralympic Games right around the corner starting March 4, 2022 so you will definitely want to have this book on hand for your young readers to build the excitement in 2022.
