City Day
City Day by Glenn Brucker is a hilarious story about animals heading to the city for a vacation.
When the people head back to the city at the end of the summer, the animals decide that maybe they will visit the city just like the humans visit the animals in the forest. This leads to some pretty hilarious hijinx throughout the day that will have readers laughing with delight.
Glenn Brucker writes this clever story from the animals’ perspective, how they perceive their trip to the city is affecting the people in the city. Readers will laugh along with the hilarious mishaps and will certainly be correcting the animals in their thinking. It’s a very fun story to talk about the impacts of humans on natural spaces and what happens when we encroach too closely on animal habitats. I especially loved when all of the animals headed to the coffee shop, because all of the humans bring their paper cups to the forest filled with coffee with “LOTS and LOTS of SUGAR!”
Humorous stories are a great way to open up conversations about the environment and to show readers the potential consequences of not caring for our animal friends. In this story, readers have the opportunity to identify some of the ways that people potentially change the behaviour of animals and the things that we can change when we go out into their habitats to make sure we leave the smallest of footprints.
Glenn Brucker also illustrates this book and what fantastic illustrations they are! The pages are filled with colour and animals. The illustrations largely contribute to the humour of the story as readers will start to understand how the perspective of the animals greatly differs from the perspective of the city dwellers. The illustrations are so full that readers will be able to discover something new each time they read.
