A Most Precious Resource
A fascinating new non fiction book all about water and its importance to the natural world, City of Water by Andrea Curtis and Katy Dockrill contains the most interesting information as well as calls to action to preserve this precious resource.
I think by now we all understand the need to protect our fresh water systems but what exactly does that look like. How does the water get to our taps and what happens after it goes down the drain? Like Andrea Curtis says right at the beginning, if you live in a city you may just take for granted that the water is always there, every time you turn on the tap. I really enjoyed how the book starts off with a bit of water history, teaching readers about the early civilizations and their innovations around water delivery. I also enjoyed how she explains exactly how water gets to our taps and the problems of access to clean, drinkable water, even in developed countries. There was so much information about how different countries are finding innovative ways to reduce water usage, recycle water and repurpose the water after is has gone down the drain. Also, there is some incredible information about what can be found in our waste water systems, you will be flabbergasted!
At the end of the book there are calls to action, tangible things that everyone can do to reduce water usage and ensure there is water for future generations.
The illustrations by Katy Dockrill are amazing. With the beautiful ocean blue dominating all of the pages it's a book that is as beautiful as it is informative.
