Learn About Germs

Well this book couldn’t be any more perfect for right now! Germy Science: The Sick Truth About Getting Sick (and Staying Healthy) by Edward Kay and Mike Shiell will help ease any anxieties your readers are having as we continue to navigate through the pandemic.

A fascinating look at germs throughout history, Edward Kay breaks down germs, the good, the bad and the ugly in five different sections. Readers can learn all about the history of germs and medical advances that have helped to fuel the fight against the bad germs. Readers also learn a ton about how germs make us sick and/or help us stay healthy. We also learn about germs that altered the course of history.

This book is riveting! I could not put it down and learned A TON about germs. I know there are good germs and bad germs but I was so interested in how these things had been discovered throughout history and the interesting choices people have made in trying to cure diseases. (a shaved chicken butt on your lymph nodes to cure the Black Plague! Yikes!) We are still seeing these interesting theories play out in the current Cocid-19 pandemic. I know you remember the drinking bleach fiasco and the horse medicine cure (double yikes!). This book demystifies germs and helps young readers understand more about what is happening inside their bodies and how they can prevent certain types of illnesses from making them feel rotten.

The book contains an excellent glossary at the end with all of the definitions for the scientific terms used in the book and offers other similar books to explore more about the science of germs.

The illustrations by Mike Shiell certainly lighten up the content. At times is gets a little heavy but thanks to the hilarious cartoon images, readers will be reassured that germs are here to stay but there is a lot we can do to keep ourselves safe and healthy.
