Celebrating Hair

Hair Twins is a new book written by Raakhee Mirchandani and illustrated by Canadian Holly Hatem featuring a Sikh father and daughter duo.

Hair Twins is a celebration of hair and the pride of being just like a parent. It’s a celebration of all of the ways we wear our hair and specifically focuses on the traditional turban many Sikh men wear. There is a beautiful father daughter relationship featured in this story and I love how Raakhee Mirchandani focuses on the ways in which father and daughter are the same, through their hair which they will not cut. That special connection they have with one another is something only father and daughter share. Readers can feel the joy emanating from the father and his daughter throughout the story.

Hair Twins also teaches readers about how and why some people wear turbans and what it represents. Not only will children enjoy the story and learn but grown ups will as well. Grown ups can pass along the knowledge the next time a child or student asks about turban wearing.

The illustrations by Holly Hatam are joyful. Featuring many different child/parent duos and showing readers that a family is a family no matter how they look. There is so much vibrant colour and happy faces throughout, children will pick this one up over and over again.
