Bold, Brave and Courageous

More and more, readers have access to books that tell a more diverse series of stories. None more so than young readers who now are so fortunate to be able to read about amazing women who are at the forefront of their respective fields or who paved the way for future inspirational women. Kids Can Press comes through again with brilliant informative non-fiction in Her Epic Adventure: 25 Daring Women who Inspire a life less Ordinary by Julia De Laurentiis Johnston and Salini Perera.

Her Epic Adventure introduces readers young and old to many amazing women. Julia De Laurentiis Johnston has combed the globe to find the stories of quite a few adventurous women who I have never seen featured in other complication books. So what sets this book apart from the others? I LOVE how Her Epic Adventure is broken up into sections based on the place where these women have achieved greatness: Sky, Peaks, Ice, Land, and Water. Julia De Laurentiis Johnston also features women from all corners of the world, from the US, Japan, India, Turtle Island and more as well as Black women, Indigenous women and disabled women who are bold and adventurous.

Each two page spread, introduces the reader to an courageous woman and gives a brief synpsis of her life and her accomplishments. Along with the synopsis, the author provides tips that go along with each adventurer’s field of choice such as how to survive an avalanche or how your body reacts in space. As with all excellent non-fiction books, there is a list of additional resources for further exploration, which is a must for books about amazing women!

Salini Perera provides her expert illustrations to fill the pages with colour and interest. Her illustrations of all of the women are particularly amazing, choosing to feature each woman doing what she does best!
