Linty: A Pocketful of Adventure

Just when you think that there are no more original ideas, here comes Linty: A Pocketful of Adventure by Mike Shiell, a graphic novel about a piece of pocket lint.

Linty lives in the pocket of an old pair of blue jeans. Everyday is just like the last, a veritable Groundhog Day, until a younger sibling is big enough to wear their older sibling's jeans. That is the day everything changes for Linty and their world opens up to new friends and new adventures.

As far as graphic novels go, this one gets an A+ in my book for humour. It’s pretty nonsensical and very silly making it perfect for its intended audience of readers ages 6 and up. Mike Shiell has taken something most of us just discard and turned it into a funny story about getting out there and taking risks. The story is straightforward and accessible, even readers who are not yet proficient readers will be able to follow the tone and the theme of the story through the text and of course the incredible illustrations.

I liked that this book is just one story instead of collection of smaller vignettes. Many graphic novels in this category seem to be collections of adventures featuring the same main characters. Readers will be able to jump in with Linty and find out all about them without the break up in the story. Neither is better or worse in my mind, I just appreciate the variety for all readers and that book creators are providing a lot of choice in this particular genre.

We laughed a lot as we read Linty together and think that you will as well. It’s a really fun concept and I know we are enjoying it day, after day, after day…. IYKYK!
