Lizzy and the Cloud

Lizzy and the Cloud

Lizzy and the Cloud by The Fan Brothers is a whimsical and charming story about a girl and the cloud she brings home to care for.

Lizzy goes for a walk to the park with her parents every Saturday. Today the cloud seller is selling the most magnificent looking clouds. Lizzy is partial to the ordinary, old fashion cloud so she buys it, names it Milo and brings it home. She follows the instructions for proper cloud care but Milo does not seem happy until she remembers rule #6.

Eric and Terry Fan (aka The Fan Brothers) are on our list of favourite picture book authors. Their stories are always a little quirky but so delightful owing to the incredible illustrations that always feel a little bit like home and the charming, well chosen words. Lizzy and the Cloud is a sweet story about a pet cloud and freedom. There is a lovely message about not keeping things confined and allowing them to explore the big wide world around them. I love how the story is short on text and large on illustrations. It’s a fantastic story to share no matter what the attention span of your little reader.

The illustrations fill each page from top to bottom, there is no space left untouched creating a feast for the eyes. In their unique way, the illustrations are mostly black and white with gorgeous highlights of colour, especially on Lizzy as the sunshine to Milo’s darkness. There is so much to see on each page making it a story that can be returned to time and again to discover something new in the illustrations as well as the words.
