Martin and the River

Martin and the River

Spring is slowly but surely making it’s way to Ontario and with it books about nature, rain and the outdoors. Martin and the River by Jon Erik Lappano and Josée Bisaillon has a very springtime vibe in a story about a big move from the country to the city.

Martin’s family is moving from the country to the big city but he’s not too thrilled about it. What about the river that flows through his backyard? Martin LOVES his river. He spends his days watching the wildlife and exploring in all the best places. He wishes he could somehow bring his river with him to the city. When the family takes a trip to get acquainted with their new home, Martin gets a wonderful surprise.

Jon-Erik Lappano’s writing is so beautiful, conveying not only his love of the outdoors and the river but all of the same sentiments many readers feel on those days when they can get lost in their explorations. Martin and the River feels like a love letter to not only the country but to the city as well. Jon-Erik made me feel at home in the pages, reminding me of my childhood in the country and my adulthood in the city. Many readers will have a fantastic time making connections to the places in the story, whether they live in a city big or small or out in a rural setting.

Josée Bisaillon’s art will simply blow you away. Her work is incredibly captivating and immersive. It’s hard not to get lost in her beautiful illustrations. Every page is packed full of delightful moments blending the city and the country together, making both places feel warm and welcoming.
