My Art My World

My Art My World

In My Art My World, author and illustrator Rita Winkler welcomes readers into her world through her lively descriptions and dynamic art.

Rita has Downs Syndrome and looks a little different from other people. Her beautiful art tells the story of her day to day life. All of her pictures are so different and inspiring, using different mediums to share her commute to work, her friends and even telemarketers. Pictures of Rita are included in the story so readers can see just what she’s up to when her illustrations are a little more abstract. We learn that Rita works at a coffee shop, loves to dance and do yoga and even knows sign language but most of all Rita loves to make art.

Art makes the world a more beautiful place and readers will be inspired to try some of the techniques Rita uses in her work. This story also serves to destigmatize intellectual disabilities for young readers. By sharing her world through dynamic art and humour, Rita demonstrates that her life is not defined by limitations but by beauty.
