Night Lunch
A gentle and sweet story about a nighttime feast with all of the city animals, Night Lunch by Eric Fan and Dena Seiferling will have your little reader’s tummy’s growling.
The night lunch cart rolls into the centre of the city and the owl is ready to serve all of his regular customers, city dwelling animals. Mouse is always hovering nearby, a little nervous and watching the delicious food served from the cart. A wonderful surprise waits for her at the end of the night.
Eric Fan, of The Fan Brothers, weaves a simple and charming story about animals, food and friendship. The text is sparse, one sentence per page, making it a perfect story for even the youngest readers. He tells the story with repeating text in a lyrical and rhythmic pattern without the use of rhyme which I absolutely love. Having a simple story and foregoing the use of rhyme gives the story a sophistication and an aura of timelessness that will leave readers feeling nostalgic.
Dena Seiferling brings her patented sepia toned illustrations to perfectly match the feeling of the story. Her illustrations are at the safe time of the present and timeless. The incredible charm she adds to the story is unmistakable and I congratulate the team at Tundra Books for matching these two brilliant creators.
Night Lunch is a story that can grow with readers and a treasure book that will spend many years in a place of honour on bookshelves.
