Everything You Need to Know about Powwow
Children are naturally curious beings. When they are told about a topic they naturally ask many MANY questions. Sometimes we as adults don’t have the knowledge they are looking for so books help us out, filling in gaps in our own knowledge to expand the minds of young readers. Orca Book Publishers has a fantastic line of middle grade nonfiction in their Orca Origins series covering topics like Ramadan, Chinese New Year and Powwow.
In Powwow: A Celebration through Song and Dance by Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane readers get an in-depth look at a powwow, from its origins as a way to resist colonialism to the celebrations as they are today, a first step in reclaiming Indigenous identity. The book is filled to the brim with photos, historical records and information about powwow food, etiquette and regalia.
Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane invites us all into the powwow and carefully describes not only her experiences as a powwow dancer but the experiences of her family and of the celebration itself. She helpfully guides those who have never been to a powwow through all of the elements, the different dances featured and the proper powwow etiquette. Readers gain an indepth look at why the powwow came to be because of colonial government policies to eradicate Indigenous celebrations and ceremonies and how Indeigenous Peoples from all over Turtle Island are holding onto their traditions and teaching through sharing them.
After reading this book, I felt immersed in the powwow experience and eager to attend my first powwow. Although that may be another year away, I am fortunate enough to have many opportunities through living in the city. Kapapamahchakwew/Wandering Spirit School in Toronto is right in my backyard and there is a big powwow celebration at the end of the school year and I know I will be there the next time gatherings are able to happen. I know that young readers will feel the same way, wanting to experience the celebration and walk the path to healing and understanding. Powwow by Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane is an incredible resource for teachers and parents alike and should be available to children all over Turtle Island.
