Learn with Siha Tooskin

Learn with Siha Tooskin

In a series of middle grade short stories, Charlene Bearhead, Wilson Bearhead and Chloe Bluebird Mustooch bring us the stories of Paul Wahasaypa (Siha Tooskin) as he learns about being a Nakota boy from his Elders and passes along knowledge to his friends and teachers.

These beautiful contemporary stories share the traditions, teachings and language of the Nakota with young readers. In these eight different stories introducing readers to the eagle feather, indigenous medicine and healers, powwow, the strength of a young man’s hair and our connection with Mother Earth, readers gain important knowledge as well as develop a sense of empathy and understanding of the Nakota and other First People, Métis and Inuit living on Turtle Island. With illustrations throughout each short story, these books are so accessible to all readers and fundamental to every school library in the country. Canadians need these stories to foster empathy and understanding and to ensure that young readers have a huge variety of perspectives to learn and reflect upon. Indigenous children will benefit from seeing their stories and teachings reflected in books that not only they are reading but their peers and classmates are reading.
