True Crime
I have featured books in the Orca Soundings line by Orca Book Publishers before. They are action packed, high interest stories that are highly readable specifically for teen readers. In Tanya Lloyd Kyi’s newest Orca Soundings book Truth, readers are immersed in a true crime story with a young reporter trying to solve a gruesome murder.
Jen is a high school reporter. When a murder occcurs at a classmate’s party, one she is attending, she knows she needs to find out the truth but not sure who she can trust. Her boyfriend has been acting sketchy since the incident as has all of his friends. When she begins to start piecing things together, her life is in danger.
The action packed storyline with easy on the eyes spacing and font makes this a perfect book to encourage teen readers who are reading at a lower level for their age group. I loved how this story was non stop from the first page to the last. It was so engaging I couldn’t put it down. I really liked the whole steroids storyline. It’s not something I read about very often anymore but certainly an issue that many high school athletes would face even today. Jen’s ability to piece things together along with her tenacity to solve the crime is inspiring for many aspiring journalists.
Just because this book is marketed for lower readers, doesn’t mean that it’s not a book all readers will enjoy. That’s the beauty of the Orca Soundings stories. Truth is a story teachers could use with an entire class without having students left behind in the reading.
