Wild About Camping

Summer time is a time to head out into nature. Jane Whittingham and Bryanna Chapekie have your little ones covered in their new picture book Wild About Camping. If you are spending the last few delicious moments of summer out in your tent, this is the perfect book to get ready.

In this simple story, readers follow two siblings as they head out on a camping trip. Throughout the book readers get to see some of the local wildlife doing many of the same things the children are doing. Although you would probably not want to encounter some of these animals at your camp site, they make for some lovely connections.

Jane Whittingham eases readers into preparation for camping. For many young readers, this may be their first experience out in a tent and Wild About Camping is a great way to build excitement and ease any fears. I love how she keeps the text very short and simple, making it an excellent book for the preschool crowd. It can be tricky to find books with short text to share with a big group of preschoolers, all with varying attention spans.

There is a lot of action in this story. Through Jane Whittingham’s lovely descriptions of what the children and the animals are up to along with Bryanna Chapeskie’s bright and bold illustrations, readers can;t help but get excited for a camping trip.

Bryanna Chapskie’s illustrations are fun, lighthearted and bold. Her style makes this book a perfect one to share with a group as a read aloud. There is a lot of humour in her art as well, making an instant connection with young readers.
