Another Squiggly Story
Andrew Larson and Mike Lowery have teamed up once again for another tale about writing. Another Squiggly Story is a reminder to all young readers and writers to write their own stories!
The main character must write an autobiography for a class assignment but is really stuck. Through the encouragement of their sister, teacher and friends they figure out a way to write The Story of Me by Me.
Andrew Larson is the master of writing about everyday occurrences. How many times did you have to write a story in school? How many times has your child been asked to write a story or write in their journal? How many times have you asked other children to write? It can be an extremely difficult task at times, especially when we must write about ourselves. I LOVE all of the gentle instruction disguised as a story from Andrew Larson. He reminds readers to brainstorm, bounce ideas off of others, take a break when it gets tricky and look for connections.
I really love the layout of the story. Although shaped like a picture book, it’s really more like a graphic story, told in panels and speech bubbles making it extremely accessible to all readers. It’s an excellent book, along with the first, A Squiggly Story, to have in elementary school classrooms as inspiration to aspiring young writers. It’s time for everyone to write their own story. It’s important, we need more stories of all kinds out in the world. Stories that reflect the writers and their experiences.
Mike Lowery’s illustrations are big and bold with dark outlines and simple backgrounds. The characters and the story shine throughout the book which keep readers engaged and interested in writing their own stories.
