The Poetry of Flight
Bird lovers will really enjoy Hawks Kettle, Puffins Wheel and other poems of birds in flight by Susan Vande Greek and Mark Hoffman.
A beautiful non-fiction book all about the way different birds move while in flight. Each two page spread begins with a poem about a specific bird followed by a detailed explanation of how the bird(s) move and act in flight. Non-fiction lovers will really enjoy learning more about the birds and poetry lovers (and teachers) will love the poems that take the reader effortlessly to the skies. Hawks Kettle, Puffins Wheel is a great book for teachers to incorporate into many different areas of their teaching, incorporating literacy in science and vice versa.
The incredible illustrations by Mark Hoffman bring this book to like. The realistic illustrations of all the birds soaring around the pages will appeal to all readers. The eye catching colours will hold the attention of even those readers who may not be the biggest poetry fans (in our house it’s the non fiction loving Bear who didn’t love the poems but found the illustrations and bird information captivating).
I love how there are a few back pages dedicated to more information about each bird featured in the book as well as full profile illustrations and close up illustrations of each bird’s feathers. Also, for those, like me, who need it a glossary for all of the scientific terms contained in the poems and descriptions. Perfect for nature collectors and nature treasure hunters.
