Raven's Ribbons

Raven's Ribbons

An ode to the round dance, the beat of the drum, and the ribbon skirt, Raven’s Ribbons by Tasha Spillett and Daniel Ramirez pays tribute to her Two-Spirit family members and ancestors.

Raven loves the round dances. The beat of the drum calling everyone to the floor and the beautiful ribbon skirts that swirl around him. He wishes he could wear a ribbon skirt but Nohkum (Grandma) has never seen a boy in a ribbon skirt. Will Raven ever realize his dream of dancing in a ribbon skirt?

This beautiful story contains so many wonders that are so perfect for readers today. What a wonderful thing to have so many stories written by Indigenous authors about culture and traditions so that we can all learn and be a part of dances and celebrations. In a time where Two-Spirit individuals are facing increased discrimination, this is a beautiful reminder that if we dream it, we can see it. I love how this story celebrates pow wows, round dances, two-spirit individuals and regalia.

I love the visceral feeling of the drum sound, penetrating through the story in various parts and reminding readers of the heartbeat of the dance. I also love the kindness and compassion that Nohkum shows to Raven by making him a ribbon skirt all his own. Ribbon skirts are made to be gifted, created by someone to honour the recipient. Raven’s Ribbons is a wonderful story to share with readers to explain this custom and also show readers that Two-Spirit individuals are important members of the community.

The illustrations by Daniel Ramirez are textured and full of colour. Created on canvas with acrylic paint, this book makes for a wonderful read aloud as readers will see things in the illustrations in one way up close and a whole different way from afar, creating a dynamic reading experience.
