 Vibrant, Clear, and Dynamic

Rosie’s Glasses by Dave Whamond published by Kids Can Press is a wordless picture book about changing your perspective.

Wordless books, have tremendous value as teaching tools and as accessible books for non-readers and reluctant readers.  When Rosie’s Glasses arrived in the mail it was an immediate draw for The Bee who is four and a non-reader. It was the first book she grabbed and immediately commented about how beautiful it was.  She then took it to the couch and started reading. After sitting with The Bee and reading the story together, I found it to be one of the best wordless books I have encountered. There is a real clear message in the story about changing perspectives, about how the world around can be dull and unforgiving until we can change our perspective and see the world through a different lens, through Rosie’s Glasses.  I really love the play on the idiom “rose-coloured glasses”. Dave Whamond makes it very clear how a little bit of colour can really bring out the best in the world. When we look around we can see the diversity and the colour that makes our world so vibrant and special.

This story is so full of incredible art.  Vibrant, clear, and dynamic the illustrations are so inviting and beautiful and will immediately catch the eye of all readers.  The beauty of a wordless book is how fabulous it is to bring into a preschool classroom to engage children in storytelling, providing them with pictures and inviting them to describe the happenings in the pictures.  Dave Whamond’s illustrations are so incredibly detailed, there will be any number of stories the young readers will be able to create.
