Simon and Chester: Super Friends
It was with great anticipation that we awaited the fourth book in the Simon and Chester series and Cale Atkinson did not disappoint! Simon and Chester Super Friends picks up right where book three left off and keeps the laughs coming!
Chester and Simon continue to enjoy their time together, they are best friends after all. Chester is also friends with Amie, a human. When Amie comes over so they can work on their science fair project, Simon starts to get jealous. When things take a turn for the worst, Simon and Chester are left with hard feelings and even perhaps in a little bit of danger.
The Simon and Chester series of graphic novels just continue to get better and better as the story moves along. We are all especially enjoying how, since book 3, we are left with a cliffhanger, something to really get us invested in the series. Super Friends ends on a very interesting note and I cannot wait to see where Cale takes us next.
This series is one that truly grows with the reader. From the first meeting of Simon and Chester in a picture book, next the first two graphic novels, short and stand alone stories on their own. Finally the concluding books, longer graphic novels that build on each other and leave readers hungry for more.
Super Friends is also HILARIOUS! I found myself chuckling out loud while reading and just being consumed with the joy of reading something super funny but with a lot of substance. In this particular story, Simon and Chester are facing some friendship growing pains as all friendships do from time to time. Things are said, someone feels left out or unappreciated leading to potential danger. We just have to wait for book five to see how these things all work out. I am also very fond of the little Easter Eggs sprinkled throughout the series for those adult readers who can appreciate references to our own childhoods.
The amount of work that goes into writing one of these books is astounding. From writing the text to drawing the characters (Cale Atkinson would have had to draw Simon and Chester HUNDREDS of times!) it’s such a monumental feat to get one graphic novel into the world but a whole series and to keep things fresh and continuously funny is such an accomplishment. Simon and Chester is a series you definitely don’t want to sleep on.
