Sundays are for Feasts
A story of food and family, Sundays are for Feasts by Leila Boukarim and Ruaida Manna will have readers salivating.
A story not to be read on an empty stomach! It’s Sunday in Lebanon and Yasmine and her family are getting ready for a family feast because that’s what happens on Sundays. It’s Yasmine’s job to make the hummus this week and she is very nervous. With gentle guidance from her Baba, Yasmine makes hummus a la Yasmine and it’s a big hit!
Leila Boukarim shares a story that is near to her heart, remembrances of Sundays feasting with family no matter where they are in the world, honouring a tradition from her home country. I love how this story embraces readers and shows them the joy of being in the kitchen and making something special of their loved ones. Even though Yasmine’s hummus wasn’t exactly like her Baba makes it, it was delicious because she made it with love and put her own spin on it. I can see that this book will inspire readers to get into the kitchen and their adults to let their children help with food prep, especially for a big occasion!
Not only do readers get to enjoy a lovely story but they are also treated to a delicious hummus recipe at the end of the book so they can make some of their very own and put their own delicious spin on it. There is also a lovely author’s note for readers to know how this story came to be and the inspiration behind it.
Ruaida Mannaa’s illustrations are a delicious delight. The beautiful, expressive faces on all of the family members invite readers into the kitchen with Yasmine and her Baba. I love how the illustrations have a softness to them while also being filled with colour and vibrancy.
