Criminals Beware

So I came across an article the other day in which Lucy Mangan states: “Very few children up to the age of 11 can or will read straight non-fiction.” And I call bull***t.  What a ridiculous statement when we clearly know children are little sponges and are drawn to information and expository texts.

A couple days later an incredible box of books arrived from Kids Can Press with some amazing non-fiction titles for this spring.  The Bear is a non-fiction lover to the core. He has a thirst for information and having a wealth of interesting, age appropriate non-fiction at his fingertips has made him the super star reader he is today.  As soon as I saw Wanted! Criminals of the Animal Kingdom by Heather Tekavec and Susan Batori I knew we had another favourite on our hands. Sure enough, The Bear dove right in!

Wanted! Criminals of the Animal Kingdom is a fun new take on information, framing all of the animals in the book as criminals.  Heather Tekavec gives each animal a nickname and lists their “criminal activity” which really just tells the reader what makes them unique.  You also get the rap sheet which lists all of the animals stats such as other names, diet, life span, etc. This is a fantastic book for all of the amazing non-fiction readers in your life.

Thank goodness for the amazing non-fiction authors out there who fill our lives with the most unusual and incredible information
