So Many Colourful Surprises
We are so excited to once again visit with Malaika’s and learn how she is growing and adapting to life in Canada. In the third book of Nadia L. Hohn’s Malaika series, Malaika’s Surprise, we learn that Malaika and Adèle are about to become big sisters. It’s a big surprise but one that Malaika is not quite sure about just yet.
There are so many surprises woven throughout this story. The surprises are exciting and a little scary too. When a new baby is going to be welcomed into the family, Adèle is very excited but Malaika is not quite sure how a new baby will affect her relationship with her mother. A new neighbour moves in next door who speaks a different language, Malaika is quick to want to play and welcome her to the neighbourhood. Malaika sees herself when she first arrived in Canada through her neighbour and readers feel the compassion, understanding and welcoming from Malaika and her family. Through Malaika’s interactions readers can learn how they can make new neighbours feel welcome in their new community.
Irene Luxbacher once again fills the pages of this story with colour, family and life. Look at the eyes. She clearly and distinctly illustrates the characters feelings through their eyes so readers can understand the different emotions that come with each new surprise.
There is kindness and generosity, celebration and family all woven into this wonderful story told in Malaika’s distinct voice, with a rich dialogue strongly rooted in her Caribbean heritage. The Malaika stories are written with the rhythmic patois of the Caribbean setting them apart and allowing readers to hear the way they may speak with their families. When you are sharing the Malaika stories embrace the rhythm for your readers. If you get a chance to see one of Nadia’s presentations in person or virtual definitely connect as her presentations are so dynamic. She always includes songs and her carnival masks into her incredible presentations.
