What Were You Expecting: First Words for New Parents

What Were You Expecting: First Words for New Parents

Back when I was having my babies, we had the glorious children’s book Go the %^&* to Sleep. There is a new hilarious board book available to new parents. What Were You Expecting: First Words for New Parents by Cameron Spires and Grace Cho is a hilarious board book for both parent and child.

Through this laugh out loud board book, parents and children are introduced to new words like owl, unicorn, dinosaur, etc. Each page has a very engaging and interesting illustration for the child to look at paired with clever text that will make storytime a real treat for parents. I think my favourite might be:

This is a rooster.

It wakes its family up at 4 a.m. too.

Do we look like farmers to you?

Cameron Spires adds some much needed sarcastic wit to the text in order keep the book relevant far past the board book stage and help keep parent’s sanity. Throw this charming board book in between the 5000th reading of Goodnight Moon for a little comic relief and to remember that the stages will come and go and you will miss the cuddle up and read stage when they grow older, or so they say.

The charm of this book comes in the back sections where things get a little sentimental and reminds all readers and listeners of all the love that those little bundles bring.

Grace Cho’s illustrations are graphic and highly engaging for little readers. Babies will love engaging with all the colours and as they grow they will find many more interesting hidden moments in the pictures.
