Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter

This week in respect to Black Lives Matter and to uphold the values of Black Out Tuesday I will not be making personal posts in order to take some time to reflect, to learn and to support Black families, friends, co-workers and neighbours

As a teacher and blogger, my job is to educate and let you know that it is never too early to have conversations with your children about race (see Today’s Parent article) and some of the best vehicles to do so are through stories. There have been many wonderful lists compiled of books you can start sharing today. Join me in taking some time this week to have conversations with your family, to reflect and learn about the injustices faced by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour) citizens.

Today’s Parent has shared their list of 27 books to help you talk to your children about racism you will want to check out HERE

We can also support black run businesses. Consider purchasing your books from A Different Booklist, a Black owned bookstore in Toronto’s west end focused on supporting BIPOC creators. They have an excellent list of children’s books as well. Check it out HERE

In Toronto’s east end Old’s Cool General Store has a fabulous collection of social justice books. They are always updating their Facebook page with their latest titles and you can find their website HERE

You may be interested in the CBC podcast The Secret Life of Canada specifically Season 1: Birchtown and Season 2: The Province of Jamaica.

Check out my Instagram page for information on other organizations you can support.
