Virtual Sleepover Camp
The lovable Megabat is back for his third adventure in Megabat is a FraidyBat by Anna Humphrey and Kass Reich and this time he heads to summer camp! There will be many overnight campers here in Ontario who will be desperately missing their time away at sleepover camp this summer. This book will help transport them back to camp. Get your campers together virtually and have a reading party, set up a tent in the backyard or basement, make some s’mores and pretend for just a little while you are back at camp. All the camp loving readers out there will get a total kick out of Megabat and Daniel’s week away at sleepover camp and will relate to the fears and the fun of your first time away.
Megabat and Daniel are spending a week at Camp Wildwood and while Megabat is very excited, Daniel is feeling quite nervous about being away from home. Megabat, being a great friend, tries to help Daniel look at things in a brighter light and help open his mind to the fun adventures to be had at camp. Of course, when they get there Daniel realizes that camp is fantastic and all of the worries he had melt away. Megabat on the other hand becomes the one scared about camp after hearing a scary campfire story on the first night. Luckily, Megabat meets some new wild bat friends who help him to embrace the camp lifestyle.
Anna Humphrey has a hit on her hands. The Megabat series is very funny and heartfelt and totally appealing to younger middle grade readers. Although The Bear could totally access this book on his own I requested we read it together so we could laugh and enjoy all of Megabat’s funny speech patterns and terrible ideas together. It’s the perfect book to read either alone or together for children who are perhaps just growing out of the read to me stage. Anna Humphrey puts so much heart into the Megabat series and her work leaves the reader entertained but also feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Megabat and Daniel are two of the most endearing characters in middle grade fiction and you just never want their story to end.
Kass Reich’s illustrations are fantastic, breaking up the chapters and adding some extra flavour to an excellent story. Her illustrations are so appealing and we really love how she captured all the fun of camp within the each little vignette. Plus, isn’t Megabat so adorable!
