The Creative Instigator’s Handbook

The Creative Instigator’s Handbook

Creativity is all around us and the power of creativity to create change has never been more obvious or necessary than in the last three years. The Creative Instigator’s Handbook: A DIY Guide to Making Social Change Through Art by Leanne Prain is the perfect book to support creative activists.

Published by Arsenal Pulp Press, Leanne Prain guides readers through ten chapters to support creators who want to affect change, have their voice heard and bring attention to topics that are important to them. She guides us through the steps to be effective creative instigators taking readers through the steps to direct our talents and our passions.

What I love about this book is the amount of inspiration for readers. There really is something for anyone who wants to use creativity as an expression for their beliefs. Leanne Prain gives helpful tips to readers thinking of creating their own projects and for those who need, there are lots of sidebars with projects already started worldwide so readers can jump in to support and start small. She leaves lots of moments for readers to stop, reflect and try to build up confidence and be inspired.

Leanne Prain also includes 2-3 case studies in each chapter. Each case study is an interview between the artist(s) with information about their projects, why they were inspired to create and how they went about finding their vision.

The Creative Instigator’s Handbook would have an excellent home in high school and college/university art classes, social justice clubs and anywhere people young and old are standing up for change.
