Hi.

Super Bugs

Super Bugs

We are always extremely excited when we find out about a new book by Ashley Spires. Many of her books are on frequent request so we were especially happy to receive her new middle grade graphic novel, Burt the Beetle Doesn’t Bite. For fans of books like BunBun and Bonbon and Narwhal and Jelly, Burt the Beetle will warm your hearts and teach you something too.

Burt the Beetle is pretty sure he has a super power, I mean, he’s got to. All the other bugs have a super power so what is Burt’s? By introducing readers to all different kinds of insects, readers not only learn about all their interesting attributes, but they also learn all about the June Beetle and how they don’t really have a distinguishing skill or superpower. However, Burt is a great friend and a kind insect so in the end finds a way to be super.

Burt the Beetle is a seriously sweet middle grade graphic novel full of funny moments and some really interesting information. We love when books can not only entertain but also leave readers with some fun facts in their back pockets. Ashley Spires also reminds us that you don’t need to have a super power to be helpful and a good friend. When we help those in need that is it’s own very special kind of super power.

The illustrations are so adorable. The insects look like the type I wouldn’t mind having around with their sweet smiles and big friendly eyes. Burt the Beetle will inspire young illustrators to try and create fun, friendly characters just like Burt and his friends.
