A Wintery Walk Home
We all experience winter in our own way. In the gorgeous Two Drops of Brown in a Cloud of White by Saumiya Balasubramaniam and Eva Campbell, a child and her mother are walking home from school in a winter wonderland. One person LOVES the snow and the other could do without it.
It’s such a lovely moment in time, when the little girl uses her powers of persuasion to convince her mother that winter isn’t so bad. Even though Ma misses the green of the trees back home, the little girl reminds her that this is her home now.
So many of us can relate to many of the sentiments in the story. When we are children winter is a pretty magical time but as we get older, winter and snow gets a little harder to endure at times. It’s a lovely story of embracing a new home.
The illustrations by Eva Campbell are breathtaking. She perfectly captures a snowy, wintery day. You will feel a chill as you read through the story. The oil and pastel on canvas illustrations really lend themselves to a group read aloud of this book. The pictures are beautiful up close but take on a whole other dimension when you look at them from afar. The pages are big bold two page spreads with so much movement.
Two Drops of Brown in a Cloud of White is definitely a winter story that will have a place of honour on the shelf right next to A Snowy Day. A classic in the making!
