Hi.

Welcome to my reviews.  Enjoy, take some time to discover a new book!  Happy reading!

Hazel Has Her Hands Full

Hazel Has Her Hands Full

Another chapter in the PAWS series by Michele Assaraskorn and Nathan Fairbairn, Hazel Has Her Hands Full is a story about ability.

Hazel’s mom is very protective, some may say overprotective. She’s never allowed to do anything by herself. When she accepts a cat sitting job on her own, she is determined to show that she is capable of doing things on her own.

PAWS is a series for this generation’s caregivers and animal lovers. With familiar vibes to The Babysitters Club and a fresh angle of pet care, something many readers are very interested in, the PAWS series introduces readers to problems and events that are current, relevant and realistic.

I love how this story focuses on Hazel’s abilities. Nathan Fairbairn shows readers that we often have hidden biases that lead to assumptions when we see someone with a physical disability. Even the mother in this story is holding these assumptions which don’t allow Hazel to live to her full potential. The quiet moment in the story when Mindy and Hazel are in the woods and Hazel's chair gets stuck. Instead of just grabbing her chair, Mindy asks first. It was a small moment in the story that spoke incredibly loud. It was a wonderful reminder not to make assumptions.

I also love how this story allows readers to envision themselves as entrepreneurs just like the PAWS gang. These middle graders are out in the community, providing community care to all the cute furry friends and also learning how to manage their time and their finances. These are stories that can provide inspiration to young readers.

Michele Assarasakorn’s illustrations and colouring are spot on for this story. There is wonderful, positive energy throughout the whole book. It’s has a bit of a manga feel to it while still having mass appeal. I love the big expressions and the colourful summer vibes throughout the story.
