The Tufted Puffins of Triangle Island
Journey to the Pacific Northwest and learn about an interesting sea bird. The Tufted Puffins of Triangle Island by Deborah Hodge and Karen Reczuch is an indepth look at these fascinating birds.
Throughout this traditional non fiction book, readers not only learn about the Tufted Puffins but also about Triangle Island, what a special place it is and how it is an important area not only for the tufted puffin but for eleven other species of sea bird.
Deborah Hodge creates a narrative story about the tufted puffin, almost like a season in the life of this curious bird. Readers have the opportunity to learn about how they hatch and care for their young, what they eat and what happens at the end of the summer and the time comes to migrate.
I love how easy this book is to read and to share. It’s a book that could easily be shared as a read aloud or a cozy up book and there is a lot of information in the book to hook reader’s interest and perhaps spur on a desire to learn more about the tufted puffin, Triangle Island and the Scott Islands or the other sea birds that call the area home for a time.
There is a lot of great information at the end of the story for readers who are collectors of information and just need more facts. There are also great links for further reading and suggestions for videos to watch to learn more. I love it when a picture book can grow with readers and be many things to a reader over the course of their lives.
Karen Reczuch’s illustrations are gorgeous! Very true to the animals and the setting, readers feel like they have landed at Triangle Island and are exploring among the puffins and other sea life. The images are rich in colour and detail and will keep readers coming back to find the things they missed the first time around.
