Lights At Night

Lights At Night

A perfect story to wind down your day no matter the season. Lights at Night by Tasha Hilderman and Maggie Zeng will have the family drifting off to dreamland after every read.

Days across the seasons wind down with different types of lights. There are porch lights and lightning, starlight and campfire, stop lights and stadium lights, the northern lights and eyeshine. All the different lights that remind us that the day is done and it’s time to wind down and get ready for the nightlight.

Tasha Hilderman creates a wonderful mediation on lights and seasons to help little readers end their day and get ready for bedtime. This story flows effortlessly throughout the seasons, reminding readers about the different things that shine in the nighttime. This story feels very comforting and reassuring making it the perfect story for the bedtime wind down. Which is not to say it isn’t fantastic for sharing during the day. This story is also a wonderful story to share as a read aloud, especially if you are learning about light. In Ontario, the grade 4 science curriculum includes a unit on light and sound so this would be the perfect little story to introduce the topic and get a group of children settled in for a lesson.

Maggie Zeng’s illustrations are joyful. She perfectly captures light throughout the story in so many different ways. The light of a thunderstorm as well as the dusk light across the fields is so realistic and inviting while also keeping things whimsical and beautiful.
